“Labor of Love” digital - procreate

This new design is a continuation of my bird houses concept of merging birds with dwelling places. Originally this was part of a concept sketch for a mural meant for a new development here in Lexington. The developer decided to go in a different direction but I still really liked the ideas so I used a section to further develop the image for a print format. The greater theme of this piece is cultivation. Cardinals cultivate long term homes and communities and I find them to be a great subject matter to reflect ourselves back to us. The barn quilt is one of my favorite features of driving through rural southern communities. I love the vibrancy of life they attach to barns that are usually symbols of labor. They feel like a reminder that these are labors of love to support greater communal life.
